ArticleIndigenous Authority in the Native Seed Sector
Indigenous authority in the native seed sector is not about creating a single national body or imposing uniform rules across Australia. It is about recognising and supporting the rights of Traditional Owners and Indigenous communities to define local protocols, guide the stewardship of culturally significant species, participate in decisions relating to seed collection and restoration, govern culturally relevant data and provenance information, and share in the economic opportunities emerging from the restoration economy. As demand for native seed grows, the challenge is not how Indigenous people participate in the sector, but how restoration systems can recognise and strengthen Indigenous authority where it already exists. National frameworks should support local decision-making, not replace it, ensuring that restoration outcomes strengthen both Country and community.
